The future of acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease in AustraliaGlobally, ARF and RHD cause more than a quarter of a million deaths and substantial disability each year.
Research
Pharmacokinetics of intramuscular versus subcutaneous administration of Benzathine Penicillin GBenzathine penicillin G (BPG) has been in use since the 1950s for treatment of skin infections, bacterial pharyngitis, syphilis and prevention of recurrent episodes of acute rheumatic fever (ARF)
Research
STopping Acute Rheumatic Fever Infections to Strengthen Health (STARFISH)STopping Acute Rheumatic Fever Infections to Strengthen Health (STARFISH) brings together a diverse and multidisciplinary research team to investigate the most effective environmental health initiatives (EHIs) aimed at reducing Strep A infections and prevent Acute Rheumatic Fever (ARF).
Research
The NZ BPG Pharmacokinetics StudyThis work will be undertaken in collaboration with The Kids Research Institute Australia and Australian based research teams to better understand how Penicillin works in Māori and Pacific children/teens who receive monthly BPG injections.
Research
Working Towards a Better Understanding of ARFGoal: Characterize the pattern of contemporary and endemic ARF and develop a biological signature to improve sensitivity and specificity of ARF diagnosis.
Research
Missed Opportunities for Diagnosing Acute Rheumatic FeverWe have read with interest the new publication by Rouhiainen and colleagues on missed opportunities for preventing or diagnosing acute rheumatic fever (ARF).
Research
Acute Rheumatic Fever Diagnosis Collaborative Network (ARC)ARC is a global network of collaborators committed to reducing the burden of RHD in our lifetime.
Research
Defining target penicillin concentrations for subsequent studies of a reformulated long-acting benzathine penicillin prototypeAims: To determine the minimum inhibitory concentrations of penicillin G against a representative collection of Strep A strains; and to evaluate the impact of penicillin G concentration and size of bacterial inoculum on the prophylactic effect for Strep A strains
Research
Population pharmacokinetics of penicillin G: insights into increased clearance at low concentrations to guide development of improved long-acting formulations for syphilisAlthough benzylpenicillin (penicillin G) is listed by the World Health Organization as an Essential Medicine, dose optimization is a persistent challenge, especially for long-acting intramuscular formulations. Maintaining sustained antibiotic exposure at target concentrations is crucial for secondary chemoprophylaxis of rheumatic heart disease and treatment of syphilis.

Transmission potential of Streptococcus pyogenes during a controlled human infection trial of pharyngitisControlled human infection (CHI) models can provide insights into transmission of pathogens such as Streptococcus pyogenes (Strep A). As part of the Controlled Human Infection with Penicillin for Streptococcus pyogenes (CHIPS) trial, we explored the potential for transmission among participants deliberately infected with the Strep A emm75 strain.
