The Australian Government has recently funded a national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Suicide Prevention Evaluation Project (ATSISPEP). To view the ATSISPEP website at UWA please click here.
This Project is undertaken by the School of Indigenous Studies in partnership with The Kids Research Institute Australia/University of Western Australia. Professor Pat Dudgeon from the School of Indigenous Studies at UWA leads the Project and A/Prof Roz Walker from The Kids Research Institute Australia oversees the development of the evaluation.
The project formally evaluates a range of existing Indigenous suicide prevention programs and services to enable the development of a much-needed evidence base for 'what works' in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander suicide prevention.
Professor Jill Milroy, Dean of School of Indigenous Studies, UWA and Executive Director, Poche Centre for Indigenous Health and Dr Tom Calma AO, Co-Chair of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Advisory Group and Prof Pat Dudgeon, UWA provide direction to the Project.
The University of Western Australia management team consisting of Prof Pat Dudgeon, Prof Jill Milroy and A/Prof Roz Walker are responsible for overseeing the Project implementation and outcomes.
Prof Dudgeon, Chair of National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Leadership in Mental Health (NATSILIMH) said it was evident there was a growing gap between the mental health of Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.
The ATSISPEP Team at UWA consists of Prof Pat Dudgeon, Gerry Georgatos, John Shevlin and Adele Cox.
The ATSISPEP Team at The Kids Research Institute Australia consists of A/Prof Roz Walker, Prof Sven Silburn, Dr Clair Scrine, Dr Carrington Shepherd, Dr Brad Farrant and Lana Hill.
- A project information sheet has been prepared to provide background information about the project.
- Maps produced for ATSISPEP provide a visual insight into how the number and rate of Indigenous suicides can vary across different regions of Australia
