A ‘core story’ is a powerful and memorable new story to support productive ways of thinking about issues. Like all good stories, a core story can be retold and adapted in a hundred different ways over time, making it a durable tool for changing how we understand issues.

A core story translates scientific or expert knowledge to make it accessible to the public, practitioners, and policymakers. It contains different moments and chapters that introduce and explain important information and principles.

The Core Story for Early Childhood Development and Learning Collaboration in Australia will explore the following topic areas:

  1. The foundational importance of the early years
  2. ‘Early’ = really early (including pregnancy)
  3. Context matters: children's environments shape development; and poverty, disadvantage, and inequity are important dimensions of context
  4. Parenting as a skill that requires support
  5. Social emotional development/child mental health
  6. The science of play.
