SPARX-T: An online game to prevent depression in trans young people

Investigators:

Internal: Associate Professor Yael Perry, Prof Ashleigh Lin, Dr Penelope Strauss, Dr Helen Morgan, Holly Moss

External: A/Prof Sam Winter (Curtin University)

Project description:

Trans young people are faced with a range of negative experiences including discrimination, harassment, victimisation, and marginalisation. These experiences place them at very high risk for developing mental health difficulties. Many trans young people are also confronted with barriers to accessing mental health services, including perceived stigma and lack of provider knowledge or experience.

Digital interventions offer an acceptable, convenient, and private alternative that can be delivered with high fidelity. To date, there are no evidence-based digital interventions aimed at preventing or treating mental health difficulties in trans young people. This project aimed to adapt an existing, evidence-based, digital intervention for and with trans youth to prevent the onset of depression in this high-risk group. The SPARX-T app has now been adapted and will be evaluated through a randomised controlled trial in 2023
