Mindful Self-Compassion for LGBTQ youth: a multi-site randomized controlled trial

Professor Ashleigh Lin, Dr Amy Finlay-Jones, A/Professor Jeneva Ohan, Ms Penelope Strauss, Associate Professor Yael Perry, Ms Zoe Waters.

The focus of this project is on improving mental health outcomes among Australian young adults (18-25 years) who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and gender diverse, and questioning or queer (LGBTQ).

For more information please contact Penelope Strauss on (08) 6319 1297 or Penelope.strauss@telethonkids.org.au

We know that young adults who are LGBTQ are more likely to experience mental health problems than their heterosexual and cisgender peers. Researchers at The Kids Research Institute Australia are interested in finding out whether a Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) training program can help LGBTQ young adults deal with difficulties in a kinder and more balanced way.

The main aim of the project is to determine whether participants in an 8 week self-compassion group program (MSC) report improved mental health outcomes compared to a group of participants on a waiting list. The MSC program is an 8-week, face-to-face group program, which involves weekly classes (one hour/week for 8 weeks).
