Plain language summary: This project will identify what makes an optimal biodiesel in terms of minimizing toxic exhaust outputs (environmental effects) and effects on health. Biodiesel, which can be made from virtually any natural oil, is seen as a healthier, environmentally friendly alternative to mineral diesel, but research has shown that some biodiesels are worse than others. By employing exposure studies and comprehensive analysis of biodiesel exhaust characteristics, our team will develop a screening algorithm against which both new and existing biodiesel types can be assessed for their environmental impacts and their risk to health. Our outcomes will help guide industry in producing an alternative fuel that is less harmful than those currently available.
