Dr Liza Kretzschmar is a postdoctoral researcher in the Indigenous genomics research group in Tarntanya (Adelaide). She is part of the team working on the South Australian PROPHECY (Predicting Renal, Ophthalmic, and Heart Events in the Aboriginal Community) Cohort study, a project aimed at assessing the levels of complications in Aboriginal people with Diabetes. Her primary focus is on participant metadata analysis and multi-omits data integration using supervised methods.

Dr Kretzschmar completed her Bachelor of Science with Honours in Biotechnology and Microbiology, followed by a PhD in molecular biology and bioinformatics and an industry R&D internship. She has worked across a breadth of fields (environmental and medical),  skill sets (wet lab and computational) and projects, for example:

  • characterising microbial community composition in municipal sewage
  • modelling the evolution of single celled marine algae and their toxins
  • discovering and describing new species of neurotoxic protists
  • quantifying the chronic illness journeys of patients in the Australian health system

The variety and extent of her experience allows her to think creatively about how to appraise and solve difficult research questions.
