Kate is a Senior Research Officer currently working on The Sibling Project, which focuses on the wellbeing, relationships, experiences and needs of children and young adults who have a sibling with a developmental disability.

Kate holds a Bachelor of Psychology (First Class Honours) and Doctor of Philosophy (Psychology). Her doctoral research used photovoice to explore the different identities and roles of people with intellectual disabilities, and focused on increasing the control and power of people with intellectual disabilities in the research process. Kate has expertise in qualitative research methodologies, including participatory action research, inclusive research practices, photovoice, individual and group interviews, and novel approaches to data analysis. Her primary research interests are disability, critical disability studies, mental health recovery, and domestic violence. Kate is committed to privileging and promoting the voice of lived experience in her research, and ensuring that research findings are translated into meaningful change for the community.

Prior to joining The Kids Research Institute Australia, Kate was a Research Fellow at Curtin University and worked on a range of projects in the areas of mental health and personal recovery, domestic violence, lived experience education, and completed a number of evaluations of mental health services. Kate has over 10 years’ experience teaching undergraduate psychology.

Well-being and support preferences of siblings of individuals with a neurodevelopmental condition in regional and remote Australia: a mixed methods investigation

This convergent parallel mixed methods study examined the role of protective factors (resilience, family functioning, and social support) in explaining sibling well-being, alongside this population's support preferences and experiences.

"The absolute dearth of resources": Challenges and unmet support needs for emerging adult siblings of individuals with neurodevelopmental conditions in regional and remote Australia

Siblings of individuals with neurodevelopmental conditions have unique experiences and sometimes additional challenges, especially in rural areas where there may be limited access to sibling-specific support services.
